In response to the occurrence of the increasingly severe ambient ozone exceedances, regional environmental managers are examining the possibility of a cleaner fuel for automobiles. At this time the leading candidate appears to be methanol. In anticipation of a shift to methanol, flexible-fueled automobiles capable of operating on gasoline and/or methanol are being developed. This study examines both the exhaust and evaporative emissions from a prototype General Motors Variable Fuel Corsica. Results are reported for tests conducted at temperatures of 40 degrees, 75 degrees, and 90 degrees F, and for fuels M0 M25, M50, M85, and M100. In addition to regulated emissions and fuel economy, emission rates for methanol, aldehydes, and a large number of hydrocarbon compounds were measured. The data indicate that increasing the fuel's methanol content does not affect the exhaust organic emission rate (calculated in accordance with the regulation) from flexible-fueled cars, but formaldehyde and methanol comprise increasingly greater portions of the organic material while hydrocarbons comprise less. Increasing fuel methanol content has no significant effect on exhaust regulated emission rates (organic material, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides) nor on the composition of total hydrocarbons, except for methane, which increases substantially. The effect of ambient temperature on both exhaust and evaporative emissions is similar to its effect on gasoline cars: organic and carbon monoxide exhaust emissions increase substantially at the lower temperatures, and evaporative emissions increase steadily with increases in temperature. 相似文献

Sediments from 12 sites in Boston Harbor were assayed for butyltins. The highest levels of tributyltin (TBT) were found at sites where commercial or pleasure boats were moored, where ocean going vessels dock, and at a former shipyard. Little or no TBT was detected at sites which do not have a history of significant boating activity. Spring barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Klaxon) plants, 9 days old, were exposed to 0.05, 0.10 or 0.15 microl litre(-1) ozone (O3) for 12 days. Fumigation was administered for 7 h between 9.00 h and 16.00 h each day. Using conventional IRGA equipment, the carbon dioxide exchange rate (CER) was shown to decrease with increasing concentration of O3 during the exposure period, falling to 60% of the control value at the highest O3 concentration. Transpiration rates and stomatal conductance showed similar trends. Light saturation curves, obtained using a leaf disc oxygen electrode, demonstrated that O3-treated leaves had lower apparent quantum yields (QY) and generally lower rates of O2 evolution at saturating light and CO2 levels. Oscillations in chlorophyll a fluorescence, normally observed in control plants, could not be detected after O3 treatment and could only be restored to some extent by feeding the phosphate sequestering agent D-mannose to the leaves. 相似文献

Biotic and abiotic degradation of di--butylphthalate (DBP) in water and sediment/water systems from six different sites was investigated under laboratory conditions. DBP disappearance was rapid in all microbially active systems and substantially reduced under sterile conditions. Adaptation of microbial populations to degrade DBP was indicated in six of nine evaluations conducted.
